I realized a while back that Benji's christening scene in TRG set us up for everything that happened in THM. Robin is out of reach, then when Strike finally gets closer Murphy walks in and Robin instinctively moves away from Strike. Bijou is looming. What a mess. In my first read of these chapters I realize now I still had hope and saw it all differently. On rereading it feels like a further descent into darkness, a darkness that's gone on for three books now and just keeps getting worse. Given the scope of this darkness I can't see it lightening up much in #9. Well, what do I know but given we're nearly through the series I didn't imagine we'd be in this position so far along. At this stage, even if buy into the idea this this is all necessary for transformation, the end result is that our time with them is drawing to a close and will limit our reward greatly. But hey, I'm a fan. I'll keep reading. I just felt so lost this time with characters I love and thought I knew but apparently didn't.

Love how you're going into mor detail on this, and, as usual, excellent analysis
